Well, that's the painful asymmetry, isn't it? They get to push it to the edge (and apparently get rewarded for that), while we have to timidly keep it moderate and pragmatic.

The inherently reactionary rural-suburban priority in the electoral college, the allocation of Senate seats, now exacerbated by gerrymandering, felon and other forms of disenfranchisement, creates this structural hurdle that the diverse-educated-urban progressive coalition never overcomes, even as demographic shifts create occasional opportunities to pressure it. I guess I had ruefully hoped against hope that the years of Obama's timid ineffectual regulations and reforms were a stopgap presiding over a gentle demographic tipping point into a more empowered voting diverse-educated-urban coalition that could address some of those deeper structural problems and so establish the ground for the more radical necessary changes in the face climate change especially in coming years -- but a disgusting and disgustingly predictable racist backlash against even Obama-style moderateness ushered in Trump while loudmouthed fauxvolutionaries decided to have a dance party as Nazis took over the government.
