Republican Id Still on Display at McCain Rallies

[via Think Progress]

We are told that McCain is trying to walk back the worst and scariest hate-mongering in evidence in his rallies lately (even while negative "dangerous" and "who is he really?" conceits still dominate McCain ads).

Of course, the popular Republican "Base" has long been a rather hateful know-nothing mob, and it is a hard thing for McCain to castigate them too much when at this point they seem to be all he has left.

No doubt, the kindler, gentler McCain Campaign trail will still abound with sulfurous exhalations from the white racist patriarchal warmongering money-grubbing thought-hating theocratic wingnut underbelly that is Movement Republicanism's glorious consummation amid the ruins of Baghdad, New Orleans, and Wall Street.

As witness this curious snippet from Pastor Arnold Conrad's invocation at a McCain rally in Davenport, Iowa today:
I would also pray, Lord, that your reputation is involved in all that happens between now and November, because there are millions of people around this world praying to their god -- whether it’s Hindu, Buddha, Allah -- that his opponent wins, for a variety of reasons. And Lord, I pray that you will guard your own reputation, because they’re going to think that their god is bigger than you, if that happens. So I pray that you will step forward and honor your own name with all that happens between now and election day.

An Obama Presidency will diminish Baby Jeebus's "reputation" among the heathen Hindoos and Islamofascists? That's the pitch? Really?

Quite apart from the fact that Obama is himself a demonstrable (and to my old school secularist mind, frankly, overly demonstrative) Christian, quite apart from the whole Separation of Church and State thing -- and, hell, why even belabor the obvious at this point when it comes to these people? -- I have to say it seems to me to take a pretty strikingly petty person to worship a god as petty as the one Pastor Conrad seems to have in mind as his own. I mean, honestly, what is wrong with these people?

No wonder that American politics have become the world's spectator sport par excellence.

You wonder why the McCain-Palin mob is so ignorant and misinformed? They get their news from absurdly erroneous (and purposefully mendacious) emails and letters that they send each other.

They are slowly going insane within their own, hermetically sealed, alternate reality.
