I think you are representative of defective DNA or just simply what humans become when they haven't a shred of humanity left worth redeeming. Knowing freaks like you exist somewhat reconciles me to the looming threat of a nuclear holocaust because, quite frankly, I'd rather see the earth reduced to rubble than populated by aberrations like you. And you will snort and chortle because I am clearly of the class of humans that you deem expendable. By golly, I'm a walking talking speciesist, nativist and a proponent of American exceptionalism. I have no use for gods but I have to say I'd love for one to appear and make mockery of your ludicrous attempts at omnipotence. Perhaps I can console myself in knowing that folks like me still have most of the guns and that simple fact is your greatest nightmare. Civil war looms, gentleman. Us speciesist types will not go quietly into the night. Somehow I don't think a bunch of effete, self-absorbed, pretentious "intellectuals" will survive that. That is, indeed, a good thing. So why don't you grab a trans-gendered mutilated partner and go have yourself a high old time. While you can.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5956838.post-1150165412565112522006-06-12T19:23:00.000-07:002006-06-12T19:23:00.000-07:00Thanks for the incisive critique. It is a lot easier to abuse by implication, and appealing to 'our' sense of superiority over 'nerds', 'freaks' and 'weirdos' than to actually address the ideas and issues. I was unable to attend this conference, and hoped that Saletan's review might provide some insight - no such luck. Thanks again for taking the time to tease out his manipulative arguments and expose them for the crap they are.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5956838.post-1149826909576664322006-06-08T21:21:00.000-07:002006-06-08T21:21:00.000-07:00HETHR was a deeply serious interdisciplinary event...HETHR was a deeply serious interdisciplinary event thronged in PhDs, public officials, scientists, and policymakers from a number of continents and institutional locations, governmental, academic, legal, advocacy, and so on.

Indeed it was! While I appreciate that Saletan eventually admits the weirdness of arbitrarily defining weirdness, the bulk of the article gave a VERY different impression of the HETHR event than the impression I received. Far from being a sideshow, the conference was more like a day at school (or at least, that's the experience in my past I can most readily compare it to).

Also, I must say...you have a very fascinating blog here. I've been enjoying reading through the archives over the past few days.Anne Corwinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04940566603711834053noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5956838.post-1149655920615377362006-06-06T21:52:00.000-07:002006-06-06T21:52:00.000-07:00It will be years rather than decades this issue be...It will be years rather than decades this issue becomes a tangible reality. And ofcourse the government where this will first play out (most likely the US if it hasn't collapsed on its face by then) will try to limit it in an orgy of xenophobia and prejudice.

Some imagine the US government outlawing, taxing or restricting, say, a neurolological adjustment that reduces sleep requirements in humans by 50% without much deleterious side effects. And THEN imagine the Chinese implementing it by the tens of millions and increasing competetiveness by leaps and bounds.

Yes I will consider the absolute future shock and confusion and paralysis that happens next to be highly entertaining.

Upgrades are there to come. If not commercial then black market.
