The Darkness of the Left Hand.
I have always felt that the seperation between Hard and Soft science fiction is an illusion only hold together by the illusion that science fiction has ever been about predicting the future. I mean Vernor VInge is generally considered a "hard" science fiction writer but he started the whole singularity nonsense.
