Sleeping In the Bed They've Made

Here are some prominent conservative pundits discounting the very possibility that McCain could choose Palin as his running mate given how palpably, disastrously, insultingly unqualified she is for the position and given the earthshattering scope of the economic, infrastructural, military, civil-liberties catastrophe the next Administration must preside over in the aftermath of the criminal incompetence of the Bush Administration.

But of course McCain was just unserious enough, just cute enough, just cynical enough, just unprincipled enough to go right ahead and make his ridiculous choice. I wonder if these very pundits have changed their tune now that the new marching orders have been released and they've had a second to get their wind back.

Hey, climate change? Looming depression? Peak oil? Nukes in an ever more unstable Pakistan and an ever more authoritarian Russia? Cheerful defenses of torture committed in our names and the jettisoning of habeus corpus and now the "pre-emptive policing" of vegetarian potlucks in the name of riot control on the streets of American cities? Hell, who cares? What's it matter? We're Republicans after all! Roll the dice! Government is a big racket and a joke anyway, right? Let's scoop up some a likeable wingnut from the PTA and PT Barnum up this roadshow, bah bah bah bomb bomb Iran, my friends! Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Truly gut-wrenchingly disgusting. And, no, I don't find any of it funny at all.

It's not funny but unfortunately it may not have been a mistake.

McCain has certainly fired up his base. Although admittedly I suspect the far right was looking for any excuse to close ranks and do a little fist pumping.

Only time will tell if this was a mistake for McCain or not. Personaly I hope it was as I despair at the possibility of Palin being a heartbeat away from the oval office.
